Hong Kong to Beijing by high-speed train from US$157
A journey from Hong Kong West Kowloon to Beijing West on train G80, 2,441 km (1,516 miles) in 8h56, showing stations, train, classes, food & scenery. For Hong Kong to Beijing train times, fares & tickets see https://www.seat61.com/hong-kong-to-beijing-by-train.htm
This was a relaxing day's train ride right across China at up to 300 km/h (186 mph), which as you can see isn't too fast to appreciate the views. The sheer scale of China's high-speed rail infrastructure is breathtaking, with a growing network and vast new stations. I hope the scale of some of the stations comes over in the video.

What does the new Beijing-backed security law mean for Hong Kong citizens? | DW News
The United Nations' top human rights official has expressed concern after Hong Kong lawmakers approved a controversial new national security law.
The legislation is an extension of an existing law passed in 2020. It gives the government greater powers to suppress dissent, mirroring laws in mainland China. It was a demand of China's communist government in Beijing which has been increasing its authority over Hong Kong.
For more on this, we talk to Nathan Law. He is a former Hong Kong lawmaker and activist, now in exile in London.

Beijing’s foreign affairs office in Hong Kong has hit back at what it called “irresponsible” remarks by the European Union, which voiced support for three activists who were jailed for refusing to help a police investigation into the group behind the city’s Tiananmen Square vigil. The Hong Kong government stressed cases would not be handled differently due to the profession, political beliefs or background of the people involved.

Hong Kong's last standing protesters testing Beijing’s security law - BBC Newsnight
Hong Kong’s civil society has been decimated by a Beijing-imposed security law that has all but silenced the political opposition.
47 of the city’s best-known critics are facing possible life in prison after being charged with conspiracy to subvert the State. They took part in an unofficial election, and they’ve faced more than two years in detention before their trial has even begun.
In 2019, the former British colony saw back-to-back street demonstrations in which thousands took to the streets to fight against greater control from Beijing.
Newsnight has been filming with one of the last groups in Hong Kong that dares to protest. Danny Vincent reports.

China Communist Party anniversary: Hong Kong silenced as Beijing celebrates centenary
Cannons roared, bands played and fighter jets soared overhead as thousands of carefully selected participants gathered in #Beijing’s iconic Tiananmen Square Thursday for a ceremony marking the centenary of the ruling #CommunistParty. Meanwhile, #HongKong held its own annual commemorations of its 1997 handover from British to Chinese rule, given added significance this year by the party centenary and the arrests of political activists and journalists following Beijing's imposition of a sweeping national security law on the city last year.
